Golden Square retained top position on the Bendigo Bank Bendigo Football League ladder after a 16-point win over Sandhurst at Country Vet Oval on Saturday. In a dour contest played in persistent rain, just 10 goals were kicked as the Bulldogs won 6.11 (47) to 4.7 (31). Sandhurst was again gallant against a top-three side, but the tough conditions favoured the bigger-bodied Bulldogs.

MARYBOROUGH’S basketball star Matthew Dellavedova capped an outstanding 2009 by being named Basketball Australia’s junior male player of the year. The skilful guard, who graduated from Maryborough’s junior competition and the Bendigo Braves, was captain of Australia’s team as last year’s world under-19 championships.
